The complete geohistory of the Geopark.
A 50 million year walk from Deba to Zumaia
The walk begins at the Deba beach where we will meet with the Black Flysch. From there we walk up the route of the Talaia Ibilbidea. The name 'talaia' refers to the historic whale spotting sites. We largely follow the coast over the cliffs and we will get to know all the relevant geological elements, such as faults, folds, animal tracks, turbidites... The fascinating landscape shows us coves and capes, waterfalls, landslides, erosion phenomena, different types of streams, etc. and various interesting trees and plants along the cliffs, including salt-tolerant plants.
From a scientific point of view, the most important part is its account of the geohistory. Along the walk we can follow the evolution of the underwater landscape and its ecological conditions, controlled by tectonic conditions. These evolve from a phase of ocean opening to a phase of compression and collision between continents. Apart from that 'long-term' evolution, we will also encounter global events that disrupt life throughout the earth
After this walk you will have a good knowledge of what happened in the ocean during these more than 50 million years.
The route has an accumulated elevation differences of about 600 meters. It is a varied walk through uneven terrain.
Recommended for children with an interest in natural history ages 12 and up.

Best moment?
This activity is somewhat dependent on low tide and requires calm weather.
Duration?
6 hours.
For whom?
This activity is interesting for people without knowledge of geology with sufficient interest. If this is your first introduction to geology, a wonderful world will open up to you.
It is also very satisfactory for people with knowledge of geology because of the richness of the strata, which are considered one of the best records of the deep ocean in the world.
Persons with reduced mobility?
This activity is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility. View the alternative activities.
